A retirement home in Auckland, New Zealand.
Located in the west, this rest home is home to over 50 Chinese elders. It resembles a high school dormitory, with rooms lined up along a long corridor. A television in the hallway plays The Legend of Zhenhuan, but beyond that, there is little sound. The space is quiet, carrying the faint scent of cake baked with milk and oil.
New Zealand is far from China, not just in distance. These elders arrived over 20 years ago, and China has become a faded memory. The Chinese magazines they hold were donated by city council libraries, some published as early as 2008 or even earlier.
